John Barnes is the footballers, footballer. A combination of speed, power, natural talent and skill John Barnes made his mark on the history of English football – even making his name in the mainstream

Barnes burst onto the scene as a 17 year old with Watford FC and quickly became a first team regular and helped the club reach the top flight of English football and then second in the 1st division the season after to Liverpool FC.

Barnes’s raw natural ability caught the eyes of the nation and he was signed to Liverpool in 1987 as part of a new generation of talent to maintain success at Anfield

In his first season he won the first division and formed a solid midfield partnership with fellow legend Peter Beardsley – and brought an excitement to Liverpool and English football.

In his 10 years with Liverpool John Barnes won 2 league titles, 2 FA Cups, 1 league cup and 3 Charity Shields – making 403 appearances and scored 106 goals

John Barnes was capped for England in 1983 and continued to represent his country until 1995 earning 79 caps.

Fully earning the respect of peers Barnes won a series of individual honours including PFA players of the year 1988, FWA Footballer of the year 88 and 90, PFA first division team of the year 88, 90, 91 and team of the century 1977 – 1996. He was made MBE in 2005

Despite all these accolades, talent and success John Barnes truly made it into the mainstream during the World Cup in 1990, in particular the (now iconic) EnglandNewOrder song World In Motion. John Barnes performed  a rap cameo that instantly established him into English culture and made him a firm favorite to the nation.
