Chelsea's Champions League Winning Manager Roberto Di Matteo comes to Northampton

Di Matteo is one of the few men to have achieved glory for Chelsea as both a player and a manager. Winning the 1997 and 2000 FA Cup, 1998 League Cup, 1998 Cup Winners Cup and 1998 UEFA Super Cup as a player. Then as caretaker manager guiding Chelsea to the 2012 FA Cup and Champions League.

As a player Di Matteo was a vital part of the Chelsea midfield, alongside Gus Poyet, Dennis Wise and Dan Petrescu, and was part of the late 90s - early 2000s revival of the club.

He is fondly remembered for his match winning goals in cup finals - scoring within 42 seconds in the FA Cup final 1997 against Middlesbrough, scoring against Boro again in the League Cup final in 1998 and scoring against Aston Villa (a team he would later go on to manage) in the 2000 FA Cup Final.

He famously quoted about Wembley 'it's a shame they are tearing the old place down, it has been a very lucky ground for me'

If he had left Chelsea as a player, he would be fondly remembered for his role in re-igniting the fortunes of the club, but his drive to become a manager and love of Chelsea brought him back as the assistant to Andre Villas-Boas. After the sacking of Villas-Boas, Di Matteo became the caretaker manager and lead Chelsea to a further FA Cup victory against Liverpool and then, his defining moment, taking Chelsea to the Champions League final against Bayern Munich - and beating them in their home city! (even beating the mighty Barcelona on route!)
